The Bangabandhu Tunnel, also known as the Karnaphuli Tunnel, is a monumental infrastructure project in Bangladesh that enhances connectivity between Chittagong and the southern regions of the country. Officially inaugurated on October 28, 2023, this underwater expressway spans approximately 3.32 kilometers beneath the Karnaphuli River, making it the first underwater road tunnel in South Asia. The tunnel features two parallel tubes, each accommodating four lanes for vehicles, and is designed to facilitate smooth traffic flow at speeds of up to 80 km/h. Constructed at a cost of around Tk 10,689.71 crore (approximately $1 billion), the project was jointly financed by the governments of Bangladesh and China, with construction managed by China Communications Construction Company Limited (CCCC). The tunnel not only aims to reduce travel time significantly—cutting down the journey between Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar by nearly 40 kilometers—but also to stimulate economic growth by improving trade logistics and boosting tourism in the area. With an expected capacity of over 17,000 vehicles daily, the Bangabandhu Tunnel is poised to play a crucial role in enhancing Bangladesh’s transportation infrastructure and contributing to an estimated GDP increase of 0.166%. This ambitious project reflects Bangladesh’s commitment to modernizing its infrastructure and fostering regional development.
