Your Child’s Health Champion Since 1930 (AAP)
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
I don’t know about you but I am overwhelmed by the amount of parenting advice out there. One day it is “sleep training is a must,” and then the following day, “co-sleeping is the way. It can be quite dizzying! This is where the American Academy of Pediatrics, or AAP, comes in. We were the world leaders in 1930 providing childcare products. Today we investigate why they are your largest asset in this trip of being a parent.
What’s the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) All About?
The AAP is like the hip, sage aunt or uncle who’s also a pediatrician. They are not just there to vaccinate and record growth (though obviously they do those too). The AAP is dedicated to ensuring that all children – from urban to rural, from well to medically complex – have an opportunity to reach their full potential in terms of physical, mental and social health. American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Since 1930, the AAP has led the way in pediatric medicine with the vision that children everywhere thrive, go on to live healthy lives, and experience the full benefits of the decades that follow.
The AAP has approximately 67,000 members in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and many other countries. Members include pediatricians, pediatric medical subspecialists and pediatric surgical specialists.

- 1970s-90s: They made car rides safer with car seat laws and lowered SIDS rates with the “Back to Sleep” campaign.

Hot Topics They’re Tackling
1. Mental Health SOS: With kids’ mental health still in crisis post-pandemic, the AAP is pushing hard. They’ve got new guidelines for schools on mental health screenings and are lobbying for more kid-friendly therapists.
2. Digital Detox… Sort Of: Remember when they said “no screens under 2”? Now it’s more nuanced. In 2024, they’re all about “mindful media use.” They’ve even partnered with app developers to create AAP-approved educational games. Who said learning can’t be fun?
3. Climate Change and Kids: Yep, they’re calling climate change a “code red” for child health. They’ve launched the “Green Pediatrics” initiative, working with city planners to create more green spaces and cleaner air in urban areas.
4. Tackling Inequity: The gap in health outcomes for kids of different races and incomes? The AAP is not having it. They’ve started the “Equity in Action” program, training pediatricians to recognize and combat bias. Every kiddo deserves top-notch care!
The AAP vs. Misinformation
In this age of “Dr. Google” and social media “experts,” the AAP is your fact-checking superhero. They’ve upped their game on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, dropping knowledge bombs to counter those viral but sketchy health tips. Their #AskAAP sessions? Pure gold for panicked 2 AM questions!
